Judges will be looking for riders to showcase creativity, originality, and unique approaches in their surfing.Ideally looking for riders to engage their rail making clean turns instead of pushing the board from the tail. Transitioning from one maneuver into the next with an even state of inertia, using full potential of the wave’s available power.Ideally, we’re looking for a well-rounded mix of classic style from the likes of longboarding icons’ (Nat Young, David Nu’uhiwa, Rell Sunn, Joyce Hoffman) to technical aspects of modern day “performance maneuvers”. How riders engage their rail and maintain speed throughout their turns will also be a point of focus. Judges would like to see riders surfing the pocket, avoiding flat sections, and making the best use of the wave’s energy while maintaining total control at all times. ![]() Judging criteria for this event has a narrowed focus on flow, control, and performance maneuvers.Before entering the first heat, competitor's boards must meet approval by contest directors.Single fin longboard (no side fins & must be 3ft over your height). ![]() The head judge is unable to leave their working position while competition is running. If any competitors have questions about the heat results, they will be able to speak with the head judge after competition has paused for the day.10 being perfect execution in every field of Vans Duct Tape criteria, as well as excellent wave selection. 1 being a poor execution of criteria &/or poor wave selection. Judges will score each wave ridden using Vans Duct Tape criteria on a scale from 1-10.Head Judge – Clovis Donizetti plus 3 Judges .Prize money determined by regional budgets Expression Session – Should the Duct Tape Invitational finish early, competitors will have the opportunity to surf in an exhibition style heat where bonus prize money will be awarded for standout surfing & any exceptional performance maneuvers with a substantial local prize.Paddle Race Prize Money: $500 per division .This event begins with all competitors starting on a line drawn in the sand, running into the water and paddling out to and around a buoy and returning the finish/start line. Paddle Race – To continue the fun & lighthearted heritage of so many surf club contests in the past, should time permit, there will be two paddle races (men’s division & women’s division) for bonus prize money. Supplemental Activities – (Pending available time in schedule) $500 awarded to the best Shared Wave ride of each heat ($250 per rider) $1000 awarded to the best Shared Wave ride in the final heat ($500 Per rider) Should there be no Shared Waves scored in a heat, that prize money gets added into the shared wave prize money in the final. *Shared waves will not be scored towards your heat total, as they will only be eligible for best shared wave prize money during the heat. Riders must engage in maneuvers with each other on the same wave for that ride to be eligible for consideration. ![]() Prize money will be awarded to the best wave/performance featuring two riders in the heat. Shared Wave Prize Money Bonus Shared waves will be judged using the same Vans Duct Tape Criteria.
